Cardiovascular Training

The word 'aerobic' means 'with oxygen' and is used to describe exercises that make the body use more oxygen. The exercises consist of long periods of movements using the larger muscle groups.

Aerobic exercises are part of an exercise program to increase the stamina. The condition of the heart and veins (cardiovascular) increases, which helps prevent problems with blood circulation and breathing. With aerobic exercise, you can also keep your weight under control.

One method to determine whether you are working aerobically, is to register for how long you are out of breath. For a workout to be effective, you need to be slightly out of breath for at least 15 to 20 minutes. If you are gasping for air, you are working to hard. On the other hand, if you are not breathing heavier than normally when you're resting, you are not working hard enough to train your heart and lungs.

Some aerobic exercises make you sweat, especially when there are a lot of arm movements and complicated choreography. This situation can raise your heart rate, but if you're not getting out of breath, there is no guarantee that you are working aerobically (although strength and endurance are trained).

Typical aerobic exercises are:

  • running / jogging
  • fitnesswalking (incline walking ~ ramping)
  • step aerobic training
  • hi-lo floor aerobic training
  • forms of aerobic kickboxing (Tae Bo, Powerstrike, Turbo Jam, Turbo Kick)
  • rebounding
  • certain dance classes.
