Are you scared to weigh yourself?
By Michelle Biton
Are you scared to WEIGH yourself?
Do you find yourself taking off your shoes just in case they add any
extra weight?
Believe you me, as grounded as I am in my weight, I too had moments
where I had to swallow hard. I NEVER would've believed that I could gain
43 pounds (20Kg) during my pregnancy. And then there was my mother who
kept reminding me that in her generation, 15 pounds (7Kg) was the
maximum acceptable weight gain!
In fact, an Australian friend of mine told me that because women focus
SO much on their weight gain, many gynecologists over there are choosing
NOT to weigh their patients!
If, however, you're not one of those fortunate Australian women, here
are some COPING MECHANISMS to help you with your
weigh-ins:
- stand backwards on the doctor's scale;
OR
- close your eyes and tell the doctor you don't want to
know the number unless there's a problem;
OR
- stand forward on the scale and completely accept and
let go of the numbers.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, though, DO NOT
compare yourself to other women (especially celebrities!!).
For those of you who actually find yourself getting into a
PANIC - here are some tools to help you PUSH THROUGH:
1. LET GO of your expectations and TRUST that your body
will return to normal.
2. Take one day at a time. Don't be hard on yourself if
you've a bad day (maybe you ate too much or didn't exercise), there's
always tomorrow. Be good to yourself and definitely avoid self-criticism
- this will only bring you down!
3. Do daily activity (even if it's walking around the
block) - this will help you connect with your body and feel proactive.
4. Take care of yourself - dress up, go out, nurture
your body, and eat well.
Remember, we all have moments of panic - but rather than letting those
moments consume your thoughts, allow them to take up 5% of your energy
and use the other 95% to work on feeling beautiful and sexy!
