Fitness History
I was the consummate non-athlete. Skinny, no hand-eye coordination, willingly
took Latin in lieu OF P.E. At college, 4 semesters of PE were required for
graduation - I took bowling, karate and (way ahead of my time) two semesters of
weight lifting, which I loved. I discovered The FIRM workout in 1985. It has
captivated me ever since - through grad school marriages, pregnancies, children,
moves, divorce, and work, it has been the one constant.
Fitness Secret
Find a realistic role model. Being realistic about a fitness role model is
essential to avoiding setting yourself up for disappointment. It's like always
being drawn to straight hairstyles when your hair is naturally curly - look for
someone, in real life or on video, whose build is more like yours, and strive
for strength and leanness, not some elusive ideal.
Nutritional Secret
My secret to avoid drinking and eating too much at parties (when my
discipline deteriorates) is to order a really disgusting drink - have you ever
tried a scotch and ginger ale? You have something in your hand, you will sip it
slowly, and it ruins the taste of the hors d'oeuvres.
Secrets for beginners
Everybody was a beginner once. What is easy to put off can begin paying off
immediately. What are you waiting for? Go slowly, go deliberately, you need to
be doing this forever, so what is the rush?
Secrets to staying Focused
Be realistic. Be forgiving. Celebrate the small victories. Don't let the
little defeats foil your whole plan. Don't think of any of this as an end result
- it never stops - don't wish for it to. Grow old with it.
